Over mij

Sanne Derks is a Dutch freelance photojournalist and anthropologist, mainly focused on self-initiated social documentary projects in Latin America. She is a member of Women Photograph. Her work is published in international media such as The Guardian, El País, Deutsche Welle and Al Jazeera. Currently she is working on a long-term project on Cuba's hidden water crisis, funded by the Dutch Fund for Special Journalist Projects and Fonds Anna Cornelis for documentary photographers and on the project Emission Zero on citizen-driven responses to climate change in contemporary Europe, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

She is holding a Master in the Psychology of Culture and Religion (2003) and a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and Gender Studies (2009). Her dissertation focused on the ways women dealt with poverty, domestic violence and ethnic exclusion at a Bolivian pilgrimage shrine. After her PhD she moved towards a more visual way of storytelling and made the documentary 'Mary in Times of Crisis' featuring the protagonists of her dissertation, while simultaneously working as a lecturer in Applied Psychology. In 2015-2016 she did a postgraduate in Photojournalism at the UAB in Barcelona and started as a freelance international storyteller, mixing anthropological themes and methods with photography.

Sanne is available for assignments in the Netherlands and abroad. Special interest in reportage; climate change resilience, housing rights, environmental topics, indigenous culture and Latin America
