In de loop van de Vietnam-oorlog tussen 1961 en 1971 hebben de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten een programma van herbicide-oorlogsvoering opgezet, waarbij ontbladeringsmiddelen vanuit de lucht werden verneveld in een poging om de vijandelijke strijdkrachten te ontdoen van beschutting en verborgen aanvoerroutes in de bossen. Meer dan 10% van de oppervlakte van Zuid-Vietnam werd minstens één keer besproeid. Een van de krachtigste herbiciden was Agent Orange, die dioxines bevatte. De gevolgen voor de menselijke gezondheid zijn zeer omstreden. De Amerikaanse National Academy of Sciences (NAS) kwam later tot de conclusie dat er voldoende bewijs is voor een verband tussen dioxines en de ziekte van Hodgkin, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma en zacht-weefselsarcoom, en suggestieve bewijzen voor een verband met andere kankers en ziekten. Vietnamese en andere onderzoekers vonden hogere percentages aangeboren misvormde baby's en kindersterfte onder populaties die aan Agent Orange werden blootgesteld. NAS schatte dat meer dan 3.000 dorpen rechtstreeks werden besproeid, waardoor tot 4,8 miljoen mensen werden blootgesteld aan dioxinen.
