De World Health Organization (WHO) heeft gewaarschuwd dat er nog slechts twee maanden zijn om een hongersnood in Somalie af te wenden. Het zou de derde hongersnood zou zijn in 25 jaar. De laatste, in 2011, doodde bijna 260.000 mensen. Niet alleen Somalie maar ook in omringende landen heerst extreme droogte. Elf miljoen mensen in Oost-Afrika dreigen om te komen van de honger. Er is met spoed 13 miljoen euro euro aan voedselhulp nodig.
