Vluchtelingen uit Midden-Amerika proberen de aandacht te vestigen op de schendingen van de mensenrechten waar ze mee te maken hebben, terwijl ze proberen de VS te bereiken. De meeste Midden-Amerikaanse migranten reizen bovenop de vrachttreinen, om het risico op uitzetting te beperken. Bussen worden vaker tegengehouden door migratieambtenaren. Soms wachten de migranten dagenlang voordat de volgende trein passeert. Vaak brengen de migranten de nacht buiten door in het stof en de kou, in de buurt van de sporen. Bijna geen kinderen en vrouwen ondernemen de reis met de trein. De kans op mensenhandel en/of geweld is groot langs het traject. Niet alle transnationale migranten kunnen zich een coyote veroorloven. De hele grens wordt echter gecontroleerd door kartels. Een manier om de grens over te steken is door drugs over de grens te dragen, met het risico om jarenlang gevangen te zitten. Het risico om gewond te raken tijdens de gemiddeld een maand durende reis is groot.
