They are usually men, they are not addicted nor do they have psychiatric illnesses, but they do often have financial problems. Bad luck and bureaucracy are working against them. The so called new homeless are a group of people that don't belong in the Dutch shelters for the homeless, where they are often refused because they don't fit the standard. They got divorced, had a very low income, or are in debt. Other reasons for the rise in 'the new homeless' are lack of affordable housing, rising rents and cutbacks on social welfare. Some of them stay over with friends or family, others try to be self-sufficient and decide to sleep in a tent.
