Gilles in Binche with Mardi Gras. The 600-year-old Carnival of Binche was added by UNESCO in 2003 to the List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Immaterial Heritage of Humanity. They are 3 days full of tradition, the costumes can cost up to 300â and it has its origins in the end of winter and announcing spring. All the Gilles are men and they can only move on music, they stomp with their clogs on the earth for fertility and carry oranges in a basket that they throw at the crowd.
