In the big cities of Mexico, Dia de muertos (day of the dead) is mainly a feast of painted faces, parades reminiscent of the one in the James Bond film 'Spectre' and element from the North American Halloween.
In the villages it is still celebrated in a traditional way. On 1 and 2 November, deceased loved ones and family are commemorated there with a meeting at the cemetery. Where the graves are decorated with orange marigold, the traditional flower of the dead. People make altars at home with a photo and the deceased's favourite food or stuff. Tamales, a traditional dish of corn, are made and distributed to family, friends and neighbours who come by to pray together. In this way they hope that the soul of the deceased will not wander and make a good journey to the hereafter.
The 45 year old Delia is a cleaning lady in the city of Santiago de Queretaro. Every year she makes a bus trip to her cottage in the mountains in the village of Pinal de Amoles to celebrate Dia de los muertos with villagers and family. At the house altar she prays for two nights to ensure her father's soul a good trip.
