    Mayans Love Basketball0

    More files...
About 50 years ago, the city of San Pedro La Laguna, at the foot of a volcano on the southwest coast of Guatemala, got its first basketball court. It does not matter that the field then consisted of dirt. Today, the municipal basketball court is located on the same site. The sport was introduced to Guatemala by American missionaries; and from the 1980s onwards, the American NBA games were broadcast on television and the popularity of the sport grew. Especially girls are encouraged to play basketball.
