The Italian city of Venice is certainly one of the world's most photographed places. The city seems to coincide with its own cliché. Every time we see the same highlights as the San Marco square, the Rialto bridge, the Canal Grande, the gondolas: on all those hundreds of thousands of photos we actually see the same thing all the time.
Artist/photographer Jan Banning, known for socio-political themes such as Bureaucratics, Comfort Girls, Law&Order and Red Utopia, wondered whether an original view of this city might not still be possible. He focused on less conspicuous places and explicitly left all clichés out of the picture.
