Rachel's Tomb is the site revered as the burial place of the Hebrew matriarch Rachel. The tomb, located at the northern entrance of Bethlehem next to the old route 60 is considered holy to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Originally this site was part of Bethlehem but in September 2002, the tomb was incorporated on the Israeli side of the West Bank barrier and surrounded by a concrete wall and watchtowers, it's now completely separated from the rest of Bethlehem; therefore Palestinian from Bethlehem can't access the tomb. Currently only Jews and tourists can visit this holy site. The tomb itself is divided in a men and women section. Women come here to pray for fertility.

Spring 2002 was the culmination of the Second Intifada, and 'Black March' was the bloodiest month in Israel's bloodiest year since the foundation of the state, in 1948. A Palestinian suicide attack was taking place evrey other day. A total of 130 Israelis were killed in this month, including some hundred citizens. In response, a large counter offensive was planned, called Operation Defensive Shield. An important target for this operation was the Palestinian refugee camp at Jenin. According to Israel, many of the attacks were prepared from this camp. The Battle of Jenin would last eleven days, from April 1 to April 11, 2002. Buildings with booby traps in the camp were destroyed with armoured bulldozers. Eventually, the Palestinians gave in. The camp was hermetically sealed, causing the wildest stories of hundreds of civilian victims. Eventually, the battle proved to have costed life to 23 Israeli soldiers and over fifty Palestinians. According to Human Rights Watch, Israel destroyed 140 homes in ten days; Another two hundred were severely damaged. Dirk-Jan arrived in Jenin just after the Israeli army had withdrawn from the refugee camp.
