El Mozone massacre took place in 1981 during the Civil War of El Salvador and 936 civilians were assassinated by the Salvadoran army's Atlacatl battalion during a counterinsurgency operation labeled "Operation Rescate" (Operation Rescue). Officially, the armed conflict between leftist guerrillas and the right-wing military government killed 75,000 and left thousands more missing.
