KHM - SOCIETY - TOURISM AT THE TEMPLES OF ANGKOR
Before becoming a tourist attraction, the city of Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire from the 9th to the 15th century. At its peak, it had a million inhabitants. Built on a single hydraulic system, it was when the city lost control of water that civilization declined.
Even if explorers had already noticed it, the French claimed in 1860 the "discovery of Angkor", and this had a worldwide impact.
Today, the legendary beauty of the site attracts two million visitors a year and it continues to grow. This symbol of the Khmer civilization is omnipresent in Cambodia, the country's flag, national beers, signs, cigarette packages.
The city has become a real amusement park where ancestral rituals are now used only to give content to the selfies.
